The primary estimates are, "Nearly 2.5 million people displaced from their homes require immediate support," Rajiv Shah, administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, said, "But "global aid efforts are now reaching only 1.5 million."

SEO is deeply concerned about the shortage of food resources and the threat of imminent starvation facing large section of Syrian people inside the country and in the refugee camps. In her report on CNN, Arwa Damon reported in Aleppo, Syria that children swarmed local volunteers as they literally scraped the bottom of pots for burnt food, which was a vivid reality of the deepening food crisis in Syria. The UN estimated that ?three million Syrians are in need of food, crops and livestock assistance. If timely assistance is not provided, the livelihood system of these vulnerable people could simply collapse.?

Describing the situation facing Syrian as immediate humanitarian emergency, Rajiv Shah, administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, said that,? at least 1 million Syrians, forced from their homes by the national uprising and government bombing, would not have food and other vital basic support, and the number could be double that or more.? The primary estimates are, "Nearly 2.5 million people displaced from their homes require immediate support," Shah said. But "global aid efforts are now reaching only 1.5 million." Other estimates suggest that after 20 months of upheaval, the number of internally displaced could be far higher in the nation of 22 million. At least 750,000 Syrians have sought refuge in neighboring Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, according to officials of the U.N. High Commission for Refugees.

In a report Published in The National on March1 19th -2012, stating that,"Syria's agricultural industry is collapsing, with farmers unable to plant crops in the face of a deadly security crackdown and crippling fuel and fertilizer shortages." Farmers describe their daily suffering as ?when villages are cut off by checkpoints and there are tanks in the fields, no one can go out and work even if they want to," A combination of high prices, a disrupted supply chain and dwindling funds could see Syrians struggling to put food on the table in coming months, aid experts have warned.

Dr. Iyad Azrak, SEO board member says, ?The need to implement food plans by WFB and FAO for Syrians inside the country and in the refugee camps is urgent. The mounting number of Syrians with shortage of food resources is alarming and could be a precursor to extensive social and health consequences. Evidently, to counter the threat of starvation which will impose additional dimension to Syrian misery, we are in need for international collaborative efforts that will provide sustainable sources of food.?

SEO reiterates Mr. Shah?s statement that ?The International plans to feed and support millions of destitute civilians have fallen short.? The SEO urges the UN food program and the FAO, Food and Agricultural Organization, to immediately provide Syrians inside the country and in refugee camps, with additional food to meet the FAO standards and maintain food security.
