(AP) ? Hugo Chavez has suffered "new complications" following his cancer surgery in Cuba, his vice president said Sunday, describing the Venezuelan leader's condition as delicate.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro spoke with a solemn expression in a televised address from Havana, saying he had spoken with Chavez and that the president sent greetings to his homeland. Maduro did not give details about the complications, which he said came amid a respiratory infection.

"Several minutes ago we were with President Chavez. We greeted each other and he himself referred to these complications," Maduro said, reading from a prepared statement. Maduro was seated alongside Chavez's eldest daughter, Rosa, and son-in-law Jorge Arreaza, as well as Attorney General Cilia Flores.

The vice president's comments suggest an increasingly difficult fight for the ailing president. The Venezuelan leader has not been seen or heard from since undergoing his fourth cancer-related surgery Dec. 11, and government officials have said he might not return in time for his scheduled Jan. 10 inauguration for a new six-year term.

"The president gave us precise instructions so that, after finishing the visit, we would tell the (Venezuelan) people about his current health condition," Maduro said. "President Chavez's state of health continues to be delicate, with complications that are being attended to, in a process not without risks."

Maduro held up a copy of a newspaper confirming that his message was recorded on Sunday.

"Thanks to his physical and spiritual strength, Comandante Chavez is facing this difficult situation," Maduro said.

Maduro said he had met various times with Chavez's medical team and relatives. He said he would remain in Havana "for the coming hours" but didn't specify how long.

Maduro, who arrived in Havana on Saturday for a sudden and unexpected trip, is the highest ranking Venezuelan official to visit Chavez since the surgery.

Before Chavez left for Cuba, he acknowledged risks in the operation and designated Maduro as his successor, telling supporters they should vote for the vice president if a new presidential election was necessary.

Chavez said his cancer had come back despite previous surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He has been fighting an undisclosed type of pelvic cancer since June 2011.

Medical experts say that it's common for patients who have undergone major surgeries to suffer respiratory infections and that how a patient fares can vary widely from a quick recovery in a couple of days to a fight for life on a respirator.

Maduro's latest update differed markedly from last Monday, when he had said he received a phone call from the president and that Chavez was up and walking.

The vice president spoke on Sunday below a picture of 19th century independence hero Simon Bolivar, the inspiration of Chavez's leftist Bolivarian Revolution movement.

Maduro expressed faith that Chavez's "immense will to live and the care of the best medical specialists will help our president successfully fight this new battle." He concluded his message saying: "Long live Chavez."

Kansas demands that sperm donor pay child support

By NBC staff and wire services

A Kansas man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple three years ago is fighting the state?s demand that he pay child support.

The two women raising the 3-year-old girl say they support the man, who responded to an ad they posted on the Craigslist website in 2009,?the Topeka Capital-Journal reported.

The issue of child support arose when the two women broke up, and the couple applied for state services. Workers at the Kansas Department for Children and Families demanded the donor?s name and then filed a child-support claim against him, the newspaper said.

Angela Bauer, one of the mothers, told the Capital-Journal?that she and her former partner, Jennifer Schreiner, support the donor, William Marotta, ?in whatever action he wants to go forward with? to fight the state's demand.

"This was a wonderful opportunity with a guy with an admirable, giving character who wanted nothing more than to help us have a child," the newspaper quoted Bauer, 40, as saying. "I feel like the state of Kansas has made a mess out of the situation."

When Bauer and Schreiner, the 34-year-old birth mother, reached a deal with Marotta that did not include any payment for his sperm donation, he signed a written agreement that relinquished all parental rights and held him?harmless ?for any child support payments demanded of him by any other person or entity, public or private ... regardless of the circumstances or said demand,??it said.?

The state argued in court papers that because the insemination wasn?t performed by a licensed physician, the contract was null and void.

When the two women split in 2010, they had eight children, including some they adopted, whom they now co-parent.?

Marotta, a 43-year-old mechanic,?was dragged into the dispute when the couple filed for state assistance. The state insisted that they reveal the donor?s identity, saying that if they refused to do so, their daughter would no longer be eligible for health care coverage. The women reluctantly complied, the Capital-Journal reported.

The girl?s birth certificate does not include her biological father?s name, and the Capital-Journal said that he had no contact with the girl, other than receiving occasional email updates from Bauer. Both women adopted the girl, although they had to file for adoption separately because the state does not recognize same-sex unions, the newspaper said. This means that the state also cannot collect child support from same-sex parents.

"More and more gays and lesbians are adopting and reproducing, and this, to me, is a step backward," said Bauer, who formerly supported the family financially but is no longer able to work due to a "serious illness."?"I think a lot of progressive movement is happening currently in the world as far as gays and lesbians go. Maybe this is Kansas' stand against some of that."

The Capital-Journal could not reach Marotta for comment and the?Kansas Department for Children and Families declined to discuss the case, citing privacy laws.

This isn?t the first time states have demanded child support from sperm donors. But in most of those cases, the sperm donor was known to the birth family ? usually a man who was friendly with a lesbian couple and who agreed to help them out.

Court rulings vary
Sperm donors who donate through a sperm bank are typically protected by state parenting shield laws. But in less straight-forward cases, courts have differed on whether the men should pay up.

A Massachusetts court ruled this year that a Nigerian immigrant had to pay child support for twins conceived through artificial insemination a year after he and his wife had separated, the Patriot Ledger reported.

And?In Vermont, a man who donated sperm to a female friend was required to pay child support because he maintained a relationship with the children.

Explained one of the mothers to The Associated Press in 2007: "Part of the decision came down because he was so involved with them. It wasn't that he went to the (sperm) bank and that was it. They called him Papa."

In New York, a married doctor agreed to donate sperm to a young resident and her partner in the late 1980s, only to be asked 18 years later for child support, the New York Post reported.

His undoing was sending money and cards to the child, which he would sign, ?Dad? or ?Daddy.? The biological father?s name was also on the birth certificate.

But in Washington state, the Court of Appeals ruled in 2004 that a donor can?t be required to pay child support unless he and the mother have signed an explicit contract.

And in Texas, an appeals court ruled in favor of a former policeman who donated sperm to a woman he had been formerly connected with. He had paid thousands of dollars in child support for twins until the court ruled in his favor.

When the lawsuit was filed in 2008, the man told McClatchy: "I was totally blown away. I was already married and had moved on with my life."

NBC's Isolde Raftery and The Associated Press contributed reporting.?

Multi-tasking whales sing while feeding, not just breeding

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Humpback whales are famed for their songs, most often heard in breeding season when males are competing to mate with females. In recent years, however, reports of whale songs occurring outside traditional breeding grounds have become more common. A new study may help explain why.

Humpbacks sing for their supper -- or at least, they sing while they hunt for it.

The research, published December 19 in PLoS ONE, uncovers the whales' little-understood acoustic behavior while foraging.

It also reveals a previously unknown behavioral flexibility on their part that allows the endangered marine mammals to balance their need to feed continuously with the competing need to exhibit mating behaviors such as song displays.

"They need to feed. They need to breed. So essentially, they multi-task," said study co-author Ari S. Friedlaender, research scientist at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment. "This suggests the widely held behavioral dichotomy of breeding-versus-feeding for this species is too simplistic."

Researchers from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, the University of California-Santa Barbara and Duke tracked 10 humpback whales in coastal waters along the Western Antarctic Peninsula in May and June 2010. The peninsula's bays and fjords are important late-season feeding grounds where humpbacks feast on krill each austral autumn before migrating to warm-water calving grounds thousands of miles away.

Using non-invasive multi-sensor tags that attach to the whales with suction cups, the researchers recorded the whales' underwater movements and vocalizations as they foraged.

All 10 of the tags picked up the sounds of background songs, and in two cases, they recorded intense and continuous whale singing with a level of organization and structure approaching that of a typical breeding-ground mating display. The song bouts sometimes lasted close to an hour and in one case occurred even while sensors indicated the whale, or a close companion, was diving and lunging for food.

Humpbacks sing most frequently during breeding season, but are known to sing on other occasions too, such as while escorting mother-calf pairs along migratory routes. Though the reasons they sing are still not thoroughly understood, one distinction is clear: Songs sung in breeding grounds are quite different in duration, phrase type and theme structure from those heard at other locations and times.

"The fact that we heard mating displays being sung in late-season foraging grounds off the coast of Antarctica suggests humpback whale behavior may be more closely tied to the time of year than to physical locations. This may signify an ability to engage in breeding activities outside their traditional warm-water breeding grounds," said Douglas P. Nowacek, Repass-Rogers University Associate Professor of Conservation Technology at Duke's Nicholas School.

As the region's climate warms, sea ice cover around the Western Antarctic Peninsula has thinned in recent years and the water stays open later in the foraging season, he explained. Whales are remaining there longer into austral autumn to feast on krill instead of heading off to warm-water breeding grounds, as many scientists previously believed.

"Mating may now be taking place at higher latitudes," Nowacek said. "This merits further study."

Alison K. Stimpert, research associate in oceanography at the Naval Postgraduate School, was lead author of the new study. Lindsey E. Peavey, a PhD Student at the University of California at Santa Barbara's Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, co-authored it with Stimpert, Friedlaender and Nowacek.

Nipping At The Heels Of Skype, VoIP Provider Rebtel Passes 20M Users, $80M In Sales And A 2-Year Streak In The Black

logoRebtelCMYKWhen people think of consumer VoIP services, the first name to come to mind for many is Skype. But while Microsoft’s recent acquisition begins to explore a new role as a social advertising network, a competing VoIP provider, Rebtel, is hoping to gain some new ground. The Stockholm-based company, which has been in operation since 2006, today is announcing that it has passed 20 million active users, with 2012 revenues of $80 million and projected turnover of $100 million for 2013. It has also seen a 250% increase in app downloads and paying users since 2011, with overall users growing currently at a rate of 500,000 each month. The business of over-the-top telephony services is a hot space right now, with companies like Whatsapp nabbing business away from carriers by becoming users’ default mobile messaging service.?As of August 2012 Whatsapp was delivering 10 billion messages per day. And as we’ve said in the past, we’ve heard that its been an?acquisition target for Facebook. Rebtel very much fits into that mold by offering a more cost-effective way of making calls on mobile devices, with a particular emphasis on long-distance calls that can cost a fortune otherwise if made via a mobile network.?”Our average users are consumers with a lot of first- and second-generation immigrants among them,”?Bernstr?m notes, so many of them will want to be calling family abroad. And while we don’t know whether Skype is profitable today (it wasn’t when Microsoft bought it), Rebtel’s CEO?Andreas Bernstr?m tells me that his company is, and has been for the past two years. That’s one reason why Rebtel has yet to raise more money since picking up a Series A round of $20 million from Index Ventures and Benchmark the year it was founded. “We have $10 million in the bank today,” he tells me. Still, scale is nothing to be sniffed at: Skype currently has some 280 million monthly active users, and yesterday another competitor, Viber, yesterday announced 140 million users; its service is completely free. That strategy may change in the future, as Rebtel gears up for further expansion. Earlier this month, it announced a new line of business as a white-label VoIP provider, releasing an SDK so that developers can incorporate Rebtel’s VoIP service into their apps. Rebtel is primarily targeting mobile developers with the service, because that is where Rebtel itself focuses most of its business, with apps for

Why Africa's lions are rapidly disappearing

Africa's lion population has dwindled to 32,000, a nearly 70 percent decline in the past 50 years, according to a new survey by Duke University.

The lions that roam Africa's savannahs have lost as much as 75 percent of their habitat in the last 50 years as humans overtake their land and the lion population dwindles, said a study released Tuesday.

Researchers at Duke University, including prominent conservationist Stuart Pimm, warn that the number of lions across the continent have dropped to as few as 32,000, with populations in West Africa under incredible pressure.

"Lion numbers have declined precipitously in the last century," the study, published Tuesday by the journal Biodiversity and Conservation, reads. "Given that many now live in small, isolated populations, this trend will continue. The situation in West Africa is particularly dire, with no large population remaining and lions now absent from many of the region's national parks."

Fifty years ago, nearly 100,000 lions roamed across the African continent. In recent years, however, an ever-growing human population has come into the savannah lands to settle and develop. That has both cut down the amount of land lions have to roam, as well as fragmented it, researchers said.

?The word savannah conjures up visions of vast open plains teeming with wildlife.? But the reality is that massive land-use change and deforestation, driven by rapid human population growth, has fragmented or degraded much of the original savannah.? Only 25 percent remains of an ecosystem that once was a third larger than the continental United States,? said? Pimm in a statement released by Duke?s Nicholas School of the Environment.

Using satellite imagery, the researchers determined the amount of land now available for lions that remains wild and minimally impacted by human growth. Those lands are rapidly diminishing, and more territory will likely be lost in the next 40 years, the report said.

Of 67 isolated locations in Africa where human populations are low enough to allow lions to survive, only 10 were deemed "strongholds" where lions have an excellent chance of survival.

Five countries in Africa have likely lost their lions since a 2002 study was run, the report said. Only nine countries contain at least 1,000 lions, while Tanzania alone has more than 40 percent of the continent's lions, it said.

"An obvious caveat is that areas for which we detect little conversion of savannahs to croplands may still suffer human impacts that make them unsuitable for lions," the report said. "Over-hunting for trophies, poaching ? of lions and of their prey species ? and conflict with pastoralists may not have any visual signal to satellites. Even where there are low human population densities and areas designated as national parks, there (may) not be lions within them."

The report calls for more mapping and studying to be done to ensure the lions' protection.

The lion research was funded by National Geographic?s Big Cats Initiative, a long-term effort to halt the decline of big cats in the wild through assessment efforts, on-the-ground conservation projects, education and a global public-awareness campaign.?

Prisoner gets stuck trying to break out of jail

Maybe for the imprisoned, any plan to break from jail sounds like a good one. But for this oversized inmate, what could have been a great escape turned into a big disaster.

The Brazilian prisoner was trying to squeeze out of a hole in the wall smashed open with a shower pipe by fellow escapees. The tattooed and bald convict tried to wriggle through after a smaller man, but he got stuck midway, half his body touching freedom, and his legs and middle stuck back in the prison.

While prisoners on the inside tried unsuccessfully to push him through, Rafael Valad?o's yells of pain alerted the authorities to the plan. The gig was up.

The prison break took place in Ceres, Brazil, according to the Telegraph. And despite the bumbling efforts inside the prison, one inmate did get free. You can see more?photos here.

"He has a very large physique and is also very tall," Lieutenant Tiago Costa of the local fire brigade told the publication.

The prisoner who made it out managed to climb over a 15-foot wall and has not been found. Valad?o is being treated for a possible fractured rib. And possibly, a bruised ego.

10 hrs.

With the economic recovery stuck in low gear, Tammy Krings has something of a happy problem for her growing, Columbus,?Ohio-based global travel business, TS24.

Some 17 years after starting with out?three employees, Krings is wrapping up a barnburner year. The company booked so much new business in 2012, she's had to?hire 60 new employees ? up from a staff of?120 in January.

Faced with that kind of rapid growth, Krings says she ran smack into one of the biggest hurdles cited by many?employers today: the so-called ?skills gap.?

??My frustration is you keep hearing about these unemployment numbers, but we have a very, very difficult time finding qualified people,? she said.

Researchers and staffing consultants say Krings' frustration is widespread, the result of a host of powerful?forces jarring the labor market?? from the ongoing, rapid infusion of technology into the workplace to the decline of vocational training in the American education system and the ongoing, mass exodus of a generation of skilled baby boomers headed for retirement. ???

As a result, Krings learned what labor economists and staffing consultants say is the hard reality of finding skilled workers in a?rapidly changing workplace.?

If you can?t find?what you?re looking for, try harder. And if that doesn?t work, you may have to cough?up the money to train the best new hires you can find.

Rock Center: Apple CEO Tim Cook unveils plans to make Macs in the US

?We?ve been able to find the types of people that we want as long we are willing to invest in them to bring them to the level of skill that we need,? said Krings.

But millions of small- and medium-sized employers, the businesses that create the bulk of new jobs, are apparently?unwilling or unable to spend the money to bring new hires up to speed.

?I don?t think companies are confident enough right now to make big investments (in training)," said?Melanie Holmes? who has tracked workplace issues in a 30-year career with Manpower, a global staffing company. ?They want to hire someone who can be productive tomorrow."

There?s no debate about the increased demand for higher-skilled workers in an economy that relies more heavily every year on advances in technology to raise the productivity of each worker. That?s why the jobs that employers said they had the hardest time filling in 2012 were skilled trades, engineers and IT Staff, according to a?Manpower survey.

?It used to be all you needed was a strong back and an alarm clock to get a really good, family-sustaining job in manufacturing,? said Holmes. ?Unfortunately for individuals ? and fortunately for companies ??technology has changed that. You need at least some post-secondary education.?

But a decades-long shift in emphasis on four-year, liberal arts college degrees has drained the supply of students entering job-based, vocational and technical schools. Employer- and union-sponsored training programs have also become artifacts of the last century, according to Peter Cappelli, a management professor at the University of Pennsylvania?s?Wharton?School who heads the school?s Center for Human Resources.?

?Apprenticeship programs have collapsed,? he said. ?We?ve got, by far, the least apprenticeship training per capita than any other industrialized country.?

Related:?Economic reality marries age-old idea -- apprenticeships -- with college

That has shifted the burden of skills training to employers ? a burden many say they?re unwilling or unable to take on. The current dearth of company-sponsored training programs is also, in part, a hangover from the mass layoffs and hiring freezes that accompanied the Great Recession. ??

?Training was one of the first things that we cut during the downturn because we weren?t hiring,? said Krings. ?If you?re not hiring, you don?t need to have anyone on board to train new hires.?

But with the economy now in its third year of a halting recovery, many companies continue to defer spending on training.

?It comes down to an excuse of budget limitations,? said?David Smith, a human resources consultant at Accenture.??The biggest issue probably is return on investment. It?s hard to measure the results. But it?s a poor excuse. People just get hung up so quickly on that point and they?re very, very short-sighted.?

Some companies simply don?t get it. Many of the ?skills gap? complaints are coming?from small companies that have limited or no human resources expertise, according to Capelli.

?If they don?t have anybody in house who understands recruiting and training and development, then there?s nobody to explain to management ?We?re looking in the wrong places? or? ?We can?t pay this much and expect to get the people we want.? ?

Related story: The 'fiscal cliff' and other reasons companies aren't hiring more workers

One simple solution would be to raise wages. The laws of economics suggest that if something is in short supply, prices should rise until demand is satisfied. If a computer programmer can earn $50 an hour working for a software company, she has little incentive to accept a $25 an hour job programming a manufacturing robot.

But Krings says she just can?t afford to pay the salaries that the best applicants are asking.

?Our customers don?t want to pay the rate they were paying three years ago,? she said. ?We?re doing more for less today.?

Like Krings, most employers apparently?are unwilling or unable to pay higher wages to compete for better skills. Manpower?s survey found that only 11 percent had increased starting salaries in 2012 to help recruit talented workers. More than three times as many said they preferred to provide additional training to existing staff.

Some hiring managers just give up looking and defer new?hires, assuming they'll save money that will add to profits. But that strategy generates a?false sense of?economy because few employers account for just?how much those unfilled jobs are costing them, said Capelli.

?You can?t account for lost opportunities, or the work that?s not getting done, or the burnout of your employees --?who all want to get out of there now because they feel you're abusing them with overwork,? he said. ?You can?t account for any of that stuff, so it looks like you?re saving money.?

Though tight budgets and a weak economy may have crimped companies' spending on training and bigger paychecks, hiring managers bemoaning the "skills gap"?may be in for a rude shock if the?economy picks up speed?next year. With increased demand for talent, the ?skills gap? will only worsen as more companies have to draw from the same pool of workers, said Holmes.

?I think it?s going to worse before it gets better,? she said. ?If business does come back year next year, we?re not going to have enough people."

Alec Baldwin Likes De Blasio for Mayor, Thinks Quinn Is 'Untrustworthy'

Alec Baldwin is definitely not running for mayor, he reiterated to Piers Morgan on Thursday night, but he knows who he's voting for: Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. So that's the secret male someone he hinted at back in May, eh? No huge surprise, as Scott Stringer has already dropped out of the race. Baldwin also reminded everyone of how little regard he has for Christine Quinn as a candidate, telling Morgan she was "untrustworthy," but a "lovely person." We don't know what Baldwin's support is actually worth, but it's a safe bet De Blasio is glad to have it, seeing as how the last Quinnipiac poll put him second to last among the Democratic field.

Rethinking the iPhone Lockscreen

iOS is boring. It's unconnected. It isn't flexible. It's slow. That's generally the consensus. And while many look to Jony Ive's new role as the answer, it doesn't exactly solve these problems. So I thought I would give it a shot. More »

Standardized road test results differ from older adults' natural driving

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2012) ? If you're thinking that little old lady driving 35 miles per hour in the passing lane shouldn't be behind the wheel, you may be right. Studies at Rhode Island Hospital, and elsewhere, have shown that our driving abilities decline with age, and for those with cognitive issues such as dementia, it can be even worse.

A standardized road test -- much like the one teenagers take to receive their learner's permit and driver's license -- is often used to measure an individual's performance, including those of older adults. But researchers at the Rhode Island Hospital's Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders Center went a step further, installing cameras in the personal vehicles of test subjects for two weeks, and then comparing their performance to the standardized test. The study is published in the November 2012 issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

"Many older people don't like to drive far from their homes, they like to stay in their comfort zone," said lead author Jennifer Davis, Ph.D., of the department of psychiatry at Rhode Island Hospital. "They don't drive many miles, and they often avoid driving at night. Taking them out of that comfort zone and placing them in an environment of formal test-taking -- one which carries with it potentially life-altering consequences (loss of their driver's license) -- may lead to significant anxiety, which in itself could impair their driving abilities."

Davis and her colleagues worked with an independent driving instructor who completed the standardized tests with 103 older adults, some healthy and some with mild cognitive impairment. The researchers then observed the drivers in their natural driving state -- in their own vehicles going about their daily routines. The driving instructor compared the videos to each participant's test results and found that the majority of the drivers fared better when driving their own vehicles.

Not surprisingly, the individuals with cognitive impairment had more errors on both the road test and naturalistic driving compared to cognitively healthy older adults. However, the cognitively impaired participants had a greater number of more severe errors on the standardized test than in their natural driving, suggesting that the standardized test may be more cognitively demanding than natural driving.

"It's natural to worry about older adults behind the wheel, even more so if they appear to have memory or cognitive issues, or have been formally diagnosed as such," Davis said. "But many of the people in our study drove safely.

"Receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease shouldn't result in an automatic revocation of an individual's driver's license," she said. "Rather, it should emphasize the importance of monitoring an older person's driving, so that he or she can safely maintain their mobility and independence for as long as possible."

Researchers note that this is the first study to compare standardized driving tests with natural driving, and requires further study.

SEO Calls on the World Food Bank & the FAO of the UN to implement Food Program for the 2.5 Million Syrians Facing Starvation

SEO urges the UN food program and the FAO, Food and Agricultural Organization, and the WFB to immediately provide Syrians inside the country and in refugee camps, with sustainable food resources to meet the FAO standards and maintain food security. The primary estimates are, "Nearly 2.5 million people displaced from their homes require immediate support," Rajiv Shah, administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, said, "But "global aid efforts are now reaching only 1.5 million."

Washignton DC (PRWEB) December 04, 2012

SEO is deeply concerned about the shortage of food resources and the threat of imminent starvation facing large section of Syrian people inside the country and in the refugee camps. In her report on CNN, Arwa Damon reported in Aleppo, Syria that children swarmed local volunteers as they literally scraped the bottom of pots for burnt food, which was a vivid reality of the deepening food crisis in Syria. The UN estimated that ?three million Syrians are in need of food, crops and livestock assistance. If timely assistance is not provided, the livelihood system of these vulnerable people could simply collapse.?

Describing the situation facing Syrian as immediate humanitarian emergency, Rajiv Shah, administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, said that,? at least 1 million Syrians, forced from their homes by the national uprising and government bombing, would not have food and other vital basic support, and the number could be double that or more.? The primary estimates are, "Nearly 2.5 million people displaced from their homes require immediate support," Shah said. But "global aid efforts are now reaching only 1.5 million." Other estimates suggest that after 20 months of upheaval, the number of internally displaced could be far higher in the nation of 22 million. At least 750,000 Syrians have sought refuge in neighboring Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, according to officials of the U.N. High Commission for Refugees.

In a report Published in The National on March1 19th -2012, stating that,"Syria's agricultural industry is collapsing, with farmers unable to plant crops in the face of a deadly security crackdown and crippling fuel and fertilizer shortages." Farmers describe their daily suffering as ?when villages are cut off by checkpoints and there are tanks in the fields, no one can go out and work even if they want to," A combination of high prices, a disrupted supply chain and dwindling funds could see Syrians struggling to put food on the table in coming months, aid experts have warned.

Dr. Iyad Azrak, SEO board member says, ?The need to implement food plans by WFB and FAO for Syrians inside the country and in the refugee camps is urgent. The mounting number of Syrians with shortage of food resources is alarming and could be a precursor to extensive social and health consequences. Evidently, to counter the threat of starvation which will impose additional dimension to Syrian misery, we are in need for international collaborative efforts that will provide sustainable sources of food.?

SEO reiterates Mr. Shah?s statement that ?The International plans to feed and support millions of destitute civilians have fallen short.? The SEO urges the UN food program and the FAO, Food and Agricultural Organization, to immediately provide Syrians inside the country and in refugee camps, with additional food to meet the FAO standards and maintain food security.

Interviewing Trevis: Coping & Managing Multiple Sclerosis - Multiple ...

Today, we continue our three-part series based on questions you sent to ?interview? me about my MS. Monday we focused on my symptoms and how multiple sclerosis has affected me. Today we tackle the questions you asked about the way I cope with MS

As we did earlier in the week, within my answers I may link to one or more blogs that have covered some of these topics before. This is not a way of saying, ?We?ve already talked about that?. Rather, it?s to point to a resource where not only I, but our whole community may have weighed in with comments and strategies which you might find helpful.

Diet:

Trevis have you ever looked into a diet by Dr. Terry Wahls? She?s a woman with progressive MS who tried several therapies, but still became wheel chair bound. Frustrated, she decided to do her own research and developed a diet based on Paleo principles and in less than a year no longer needs a wheelchair as she improved significantly. Check out her website http://www.terrywhals.com and see what you think. Please note I?m not yet promoting this as I haven?t tried it long enough, but would love to achieve similar result. My MS is also progressive and I?ve used a scooter or chair for over 10 years.

Posted by Tom D

I have looked at Dr. Wahls diet, Tom. I am neither a nutritionist nor dietitian. I am, however, a chef who lives with MS so I do have a keen interest in food and how it might play a role in MS.

Have a look at the Caring Kitchen video on the media page of TrevisLGleason.com for a presentation by an RD who lives with MS. She talks about Dr Wahls? diet. In the one of the segments.

This is totally non Ms related, but what kind of a restaurant did you work in? As a chef, what were your favorite menu items to cook?

Posted by Maggie

I worked in many ?kinds? of operations, Maggie; Restaurants, Hotels, Bakeries, etc. I taught at university and culinary schools as well as running several schools. My passions are for textural experience that accompanies food ? along with exquisite flavors, of course! This may be very helpful as I?ve lost parts of my sense of taste to MS on more than one occasion. I love all foods and appreciate the way that so many cultures have taken the ?laws? of cooking ? if you will ? and use them with different ingredients.

Good Morning Trevis! I know I haven?t posted in a while, but I have been reading & trying to catch up on things as much as this insane life with MS will allow me to.

Are there any specific things you do with your diet or particular foods that you avoid or found that certain foods ?trigger? symptoms? I know I do & I find that when I veer off too often or by accident that I end up paying for it with being symptomatic or with a major flare.

Posted by Cris

I don?t know that I?ve heard before of any foods that trigger symptoms ? for me or for others. If, however, one were to find a food that seems to directly affect symptoms, I?d have to think it was an allergy or something and that the reaction was sympathetic. Check with your doc on that one, Cris

Trevis-I?m. Very interested in the whole picture of the new approach you wrote about a while back, regarding an holistic, more natural approach to managing your MS. Precisely: diet, exercise, supplements, any complementary therapies such as Tai Chi, yoga, meditation, psychotherapy, etc.

It goes without saying, that we understand that these things are your choice and you will be sharing YOUR way, rather than advocating anything.

Hugz, Rusty ;)

Posted by Rusty

Rusty, ?the road to hell is paved with good intentions? they say. Well, I?ve been a bricklayer of said intentions.

Three months of going away parties have not been kind to my plans. Once we?ve settled we intend to redouble our efforts as to diet, reduce stress (Ireland will help with that!) and to exercise more regularly.

Travis, You mentioned in your food video about LDL cholesterol and MS activity. My MS was very active this spring, nothing really new just more than what I usually have of the same old stuff, and when I had my physical in July my LDL was high just a little. The doctor said watch your diet, but no other meds or guidelines. I have been doing that the best I know, and MS has been better, but would like to get lower to see if that helps. What do you do to keep your cholesterol levels low? Any other diet tips?

Cindy D.

Posted by Cindy D

Cindy, a couple of teaspoons of oat bran on your morning yogurt and again over a salad or something in the evening will do you wonders! Cheers

I am curious about your MS diet. You mentioned getting off the MS drugs and instead focusing on diet, supplements, etc. Can you please provide more info on the new path you?ve chosen? Do you have ?trigger? foods? Do you exercise?

Posted by Melissa

Melissa, our intent is to stick to a low-fat, vegetarian diet for four or five days per week and to increase our intake of fish on the weekends. I?ll not forego the lovely lamb and beef here in Kerry, but we intend to limit our intake. That our butcher could tell us not only farm & famer, but even diet of the meat we?ll be eating, I feel very good about our diet plans going forward. As for the other parts of your question, please see the answers above.

Meds/Treatments:

I have so many questions that I might fill up the page, besides I can?t wait for your book to come out and I know that from it I will have answers to all my questions. For now I would like to hear about energy-boosting meds. If you use them and if you do, when did you tried first. I have problems with lack of energy, but I don?t know when I should take some.

Poste by Silvia

First, Silvia, my book deals with the living part of living with MS. I try to keep the disease to the role of a supporting character.

Provigil (and its new generic formula) have worked for me in the past but I call it The Loan Shark Drug as I have to pay back with interest.

Hi,Trevis- What do you do when you feel a flare starting up? My neuro told me Solumedrol hastens the recovery, but it could get better w/o. I have osteoporosis ( steroid related) from past drips. How do you decide when you?ve waited long enough? Also, what?s the treatment in Ireland? Is it the plasma exchange (Tcelna)?

I know what you mean about the steroid ?issues?, SusanR. I?ve lost one hip to them already and the other one doesn?t look too good on x-ray films.

I?ve read studies that say that we?re in the same place one year after a flair whether or not we take ?the drip?. I can imagine a set of symptoms which would force me to consider taking another course, but let?s just say those symptoms are worst case scenario.

As to plasma plasmapheresis, that is not a front-line treatment in Ireland. They use many of the same meds that we use in the US I?m keeping my doc in Seattle and will, with the help of my dear wife, care for myself for the most part.

Trevis,

I was diagnosed with MS nearly 9 years ago. It has been labeled as Secondary Progressive after the initial and customary diagnosis of Remitting/Relapsing. It has impacted my right arm and leg. I am not on any treatments at the moment as what little is available; i.e. the walking pill seems to be worse than the disease. Recently, I have tried an electronic stimulation device on my leg. It was OK, but not exactly what I was hoping for. Have you ever tried this type of treatment or have any suggestions as to what else might help my deteriorating gait?Thank you!

Jim, I?ve tested one of the walk aids you speak of. My drop-foot wasn?t really helped by it, though I know many who love theirs. I have recently been fitted with a great leg/foot brace made in Germany that I really like a lot!

Also, the use of a cane or walker can be more helpful for many reasons. One of which it that it slows me down enough to take the care in walking that I need to observe.

Are you familiar with the MS research and work of Dr. Zamboni, and what do you think of it?

Barbara, I am quite familiar and the followers of the Zamboni treatment are quite familiar with me. I am a hopeful skeptic of the procedure and look forward to science playing out here.

Unfortunately, the most recent studies published do not look too good.

Can you share anyone?s experience with Tysabri and its after-effects specifically full body pain several days after an infusion lasting about 2 weeks and diminishing somewhat until the next infusion?

Many thanks!

I am not aware of full-body pain with Tysabri. Being that I?ve never taken the drug, I have no experience with it. I do, however, know hundreds of people who take Tysabri and I?ve never heard of this symptom.

If anyone in the Life With MS community would like to chime in, I welcome that.
