Minister of State Goodyear Showcases Canada's S&T Achievements to International Decision Makers
OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 7, 2012) - The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) continues to highlight Canada's achievements in encouraging partnerships among government, academic and business sectors and fostering innovation during his visit to Japan for the ninth Science and Technology in Society Forum in Kyoto, Japan. The Minister of State will have the opportunity to address the Forum's delegates from 80 countries tomorrow.

City Land Contaminated With Dry Cleaning Compounds - KPLR 11

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)? The History Museum released environmental reports Friday that show land purchased from a former St. Louis mayor is contaminated with dry cleaning compounds.
It?s not at all uncommon for city land to contain some contaminants after generations of use.
This was the site of Big Jakes Bar-b-que and before that McDonalds and earlier a dry cleaners.
?The Missouri Historical Society, headquarter in Forest Park, paid $875,000 for the Delmar land hoping to build a community history center there. But museum leaders changed their minds.?? Now it is at the heart of a controversy over how the tax supported cultural institution is operated.
Environmental reports released today show the museum knew before it closed on the Delmar property that it contained toxic metals including arsenic, chromium and lead.
But that information was never discussed publically or identified in a request for bids to demolish the restaurant.
The History Museum bought the land at the height of the real estate market in 2006 from former St. Louis city Mayor Freeman Bosley, Jr.? A spokesman says the trustees thought the property was worth the price and the cost of the cleanup.
Now museum officials hope to sell the property when the real estate market improves.
The umbrella zoo museum district board is reviewing the situation and may take action later this month.

Colts coach Pagano diagnosed with leukemia
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? It took Chuck Pagano less than nine months to instill his fighter's mentality and hopeful spirit in the Indianapolis Colts.
He will need both to survive the biggest battle of his life ? leukemia.
In a somber news conference Monday, the Colts announced that their new coach had been hospitalized for cancer treatment and probably would not return to full coaching duties this season. He will be replaced on an interim basis by offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.
"He will do fine," Arians said, his voice cracking as he recalled his own fight with prostate cancer in 2007. "I know him. He's a fighter. He's survived tough times already in his life. As a cancer survivor myself, I know that these first few days are really hard on you but as he and I talked yesterday, it's just a matter of time."
It didn't take long for the Colts to figure out how to pay tribute to the first-time head coach who rekindled excitement in the locker room and around town after the Colts' awful 2-14 season a year ago.
"I asked Mr. Irsay if we would leave the light on in his office permanently till he comes back and we are going to do that," Arians said.
The shocking news trickled out as players and assistant coaches were returning to the team complex after the Colts' bye week and one day before Pagano's 52nd birthday.
Pagano was admitted to an Indianapolis hospital last Wednesday to begin treatments for acute promyelocytic leukemia, an illness in which the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells that interfere with healthy blood cells. Symptoms can include weakness, weight loss and easy bruising or bleeding.
Pagano will be treated with chemotherapy and drugs, said Dr. Larry Cripe, Pagano's physician. The process usually requires patients to spend four to five weeks in the hospital, but Colts owner Jim Irsay said he expected Pagano to stay a bit longer, six to eight weeks. Indy (1-2) hosts the Packers (2-2) on Sunday.
Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, the draft's No. 2 pick behind Luck, wrote on Twitter: "Football is football. But Life is more important. Sending Prayers up for Coach Chuck Pagano during this trying time."
Indy officials asked fans with similar sentiments to send cards through the team headquarters, but said Pagano could not receive flowers. He is being kept in a "protective" environment where the air is filtered and hand-washing is essential.
"The goal of the treatment is to cure the disease," Cripe said, declining to discuss the survival rates for patients with this form of leukemia. "That means that he's returned to a fully functional life, the life that he worked so hard to earn and he's looking forward to leading the Colts to some Super Bowls."
Cripe said Pagano's wife, Tina, had been at his bedside each night. Irsay said she was the one who pushed him to see the doctor after noticing unusual bruising on his body.
Arians was notified of the illness in a phone call with Pagano; players and the other assistants didn't find out until Monday ? another blow for a team that has faced more than its share of adversity over the past decade.
Seven years ago, then coach Tony Dungy's 18-year-old son, James, was found dead in an apartment in Tampa, Fla. The death was later ruled a suicide. Dungy missed Indy's next game, then returned for the final week of the regular season. In 2006, the Colts were jolted again by the death of Reggie Wayne's brother, Rashad, in a traffic accident.
Irsay isn't sure when Pagano will be back and said only that he hopes Pagano will be able to coach from the press box later this season.
"He's going to be greatly missed, there's no question about it in terms of his intensity, his energy, his leadership, the things that made him the candidate that (general manager) Ryan (Grigson) and I selected ultimately as our head coach," Irsay said. "I know in meeting with the team, in meeting with the coaches, there's nothing more than we want to get that Green Bay game ball and have a victory game ball and be able to walk that into the hospital and put that in his hands. That's our goal."
Last year, after losing ironman Peyton Manning for the entire season because of multiple neck surgeries, one of the preseason's Super Bowl favorite was terrible and wound up with the No. 1 draft pick and the impetus to rebuild. Manning, the longtime face of the franchise, and a handful of other fan favorites were released in March as the Colts embarked on a major rebuilding project ? a project Pagano had been expected to oversee in the next big chapter of his family's coaching legacy.
Pagano's father, Sam, won three Colorado state championships as a high school coach but never took a college or pro job. Pagano's younger brother, John, is the defensive coordinator with the San Diego Chargers.
While the Colts attempted to take a business-as-usual approach at Monday's practice, nothing was the same.
Grigson was still trying to figure out how the coaching duties will be handled during Pagano's absence, and the talk about statistics focused on things of far greater significance than offensive or defensive rankings.
"This is not an easy day for all of us," said Arians, a longtime NFL assistant who has never been a head coach. "Not the way that I had ever dreamed about addressing a group like this. But I know we are going to get through it."
The Colts have no doubts Chuck Pagano will win the battle.
"We are very optimistic. Chuck is a fighter," Grigson said. "As we talked to the players this morning, the best medicine for him is for the team to continue to fight four quarters and to show him what he said is still in existence and it will be."

comScore published the survey results of their study of the American mobile landscape in the three months leading up to August, and found that Samsung is still the king of the heap with 25.7% share, while Android was also on top of all smartphone operating systems with 52.6%. By comparison, LG has 18.2%, Apple 17.1%, Motorola 11.2%, and HTC 6.3%. iOS has 34.3% of smartphone platform share, followed by 8.3% BlackBerry, 3.6% Windows Phone/Windows Mobile, and 0.7% Symbian. The survey spanned a respectable sample size of 30,000 consumers, so these numbers should give at least a reasonable ballpark of the current state of affairs.
So, yay, Android on top, as ever. Even LG is beating out Apple's market share, but I'd be curious to see if iOS makes up a bit of ground following the iPhone 5 launch. Also, it would be interesting to see how these numbers stack up against major international markets, such as Europe and China.

Teresa's talk turns to trouble on 'RHONJ' reunion

We laughed, we cried, we cringed. A lot. While this season of "Real Housewives of New Jersey" might have lagged in places, the reunion recap didn't hold back. Jacqueline Laurita and Teresa Giudice were going at each other hard before the first commercial break and it just escalated from there.
But it wasn't just about French manicured finger pointing. Bravo aired the sweetest montage of Jacqueline and her autistic son Nicholas that had everyone tearing by the end. He's just 3, but has regressed to the point that he can't tell Jacqueline he loves her anymore. Gulp.

If she was smart, Tre should have thrown up her hands in defeat and kept her mouth shut for the rest of the show. Who isn't going to be on Team Jacqueline when the poor woman is dealing with issues far more important than a sister-in-law who wears the same glitter eyeshadow?
Instead, Teresa blurted out how li'l Audriana and Nicholas used to be girlfriend and boyfriend, but they'd broken up. Bad move. But it did prompt one of the best lines of the night from Caroline Manzo: "Listen, you and your (expletive) Christmas pageant dress, sit back and shut the (expletive) up, we're talking about this kid."
Teresa just doesn't know when to get her digs in.

She revealed Caroline had a tummy tuck, then mocked her "blubber" and need for Botox just after daughter Lauren Manzo's shared her weight struggles and bemoaned the people on Twitter who tell her she's "fat and disgusting."
And Tre got served again. "You realize that what you're saying to her right now is the reason that people out there kill themselves because of (expletive) like you," accused Lauren. Seriously Teresa, it's all about timing.
It's no surprise Teresa hasn't seen any of the women except Melissa Gorga since last season, (and apparently even that encounter at Gia's birthday went badly). Jacqueline also revealed how it wasn't just the Porsche fashion show that ruined their friendship. According to her, she overheard Teresa reneging on their Napa Valley reunion, telling Melissa that same night, "I hate Jacqueline, I can't look at her effing face..."

So what else did viewers learn Sunday night?
Caroline isn't menopausal, she's just a self-diagnosed b----.
Kathy Wakile had her nose and lips done and looked fabulous. Jacqueline's also had her lips done and filler on her cheekbones. In fact, all the women looked good, especially J.Lo look-alike Melissa -- even with her disputed glitter eyes.
Lauren, who's 35 pounds lighter, claimed Teresa doesn't write her own blog posts for Bravo's website, which seemed largely based on T.'s inability to spell or define "napalm."
Teresa's convinced that Juicy Joe would score more digits than Richie Wakile. (Famous last words.)
And Kathy may or may not have almost gotten divorced.
And that's just part one of a three-episode reunion.

Chamber launches voter mobilization effort
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has spent tens of millions of dollars on television ads to help boost Republican congressional candidates, launched an extensive effort on Monday to mobilize voters.
The pro-business lobbying group unveiled VoteForJobs2012.com, a website designed to educate voters and get them to the polls. The site will include voter registration forms, absentee ballots and polling place locators. It also will include information on House and Senate races and a comparison of the candidates on the issues.
"We are working harder than ever to make sure voters in every state, district and precinct know which candidates have a record of fighting for pro-growth policies that will revitalize our economy and put Americans back to work," said Thomas J. Donahue, president and CEO of the Chamber, in a statement.
The website is part of the Chamber's effort to get out the vote and comes in addition to its wave of television advertising.
The Chamber has spent more than $19 million on ads this election cycle, much of it targeting Democratic candidates. It is expected to spend millions more in the next five weeks before Election Day. It recently bought $2 million in ads in Florida to challenge Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and $390,000 in North Dakota to air spots against Heidi Heitkamp. The Chamber also invested about $3 million in California for commercials going after eight Democrats in House races.
Among the Chamber's top Democratic targets are Nelson, Virginia's Tim Kaine, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown and Montana Sen. Jon Tester. The Chamber also spent more than $800,000 in Maine on ads criticizing independent candidate Angus King, who is locked in a three-way race to replace Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe. If elected, King is likely to caucus with the Democrats.
